ABOUT ABRAHAM ABRAHAM

Co-founder of the New York City Department store Abraham & Straus. His retail chain was later bought out by Macy's.

As a teenager, he worked at the Hart & Dettlebach department store in New Jersey, earning a salary of one dollar per week.

A notable philanthropist, he funded the establishment of the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital.

He was the New York-born son of Judah Abraham and Sarah Sussman. Nina Rothschild Utne, his great-great-granddaughter, became a prominent publisher.

Roland Hussey Macy, Sr. founded the Macy's department store chain, which eventually incorporated Abraham's smaller Abraham & Straus chain.
