Jazz artist whose list of collaborations was long and impressive. However, he was underrated and overlooked while he was alive.
He entered Morgan State University and the Peabody Conservatory late in the 1950s.
He played at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1967, at Carnegie Hall in the 1980s, and joined the Upper Manhattan Jazz Society.
His personal life was largely unknown. In many ways, music was his life. He was born in Baltimore and died of pneumonia in Denver.
He earned many admirers, including jazz saxophonist Stan Getz . Some fans have described his style as hypnotic with its shimmering harmonies and phrases.
