He studied with composers Herman Inch and Edward Royce of the Eastman School of Music, although he never actually enrolled or graduated from the institution.
He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame three years after his death.
He was emancipated from his family as a teenager.
He was close friends with Tony Bennett , Frank Sinatra, and Peggy Lee.
