ABOUT ALFREDO KEIL
Composed the Portuguese national anthem, "A Portuguesa," in 1891, although it was not adopted until four years after his death. The lyrics were penned by poet and playwright Henrique Lopes de Mendonça.
He studied in Germany and Portugal before starting his career. He would become known for his operas, though he was also a romantic painter. In fact, historians would consider him to be the last great Portuguese romantic painter.
His most popular operas included "D. Branca" from 1883, "Irene" from 1893, and "Serrana" from 1899, which was at one time considered the greatest Portuguese opera.
He was born to Johann Christian Keil and Maria Josefina Stellflug.
He was a romantic composer like Giuseppe Verdi .
