He worked in Paris, France as a teacher of physics, mathematics, astronomy, chemistry, and anatomy.
His birth name was Hippolyte Leon Denizard Rivail; he wrote under the pen name of Allan Kardec.
After marrying Amelie Gabrielle Boudet in 1832, he converted from Catholicism to Spiritism.
