Salvadoran politician and former President of El Salvador from 1982 to 1984.

His inauguration as President in May 1982 marked the beginning of elected government leaders in El Salvador, after the junta of 1979-1980.

He earned his master's degree at the University of Chicago in 1995.

He was married to Lisabele Magana for 47 years.

He was President of El Salvador while Fidel Castro was the leader of Cuba.
