Classical concert pianist known for her starkly original approach to interpreting revered composers like Beethoven and Brahms.
She won first prize at the Kabalevsky Competition in 1986. She followed this up by winning first prize at the Chopin Competition three years later.
She filmed six short films for Deutsche Welle TV about Russian art.
Her family was populated with musicians, starting with her parents who were instructors at the Kazan Music Academy.
