Czechia politician who was best known as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia from 1953 to 1968. He was also the president of Czechoslovakia from 1957 to 1968. As the president, he was succeeded by Ludvík Svoboda.
He worked as a blacksmith when he was young.
He was selected as a delegate to the 7th World Congress of the Comintern in 1935.
In 1929, he married Božena Novotná and they had a child named Antonín Novotný.
During the reform movement of 1968, he was forced to yield the reins of power to Alexander Dubcek .
