Classical artist who performed at such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center, and the Metropolitan Museum.
He joined the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin when he was 23. He also taught at the Eastman School of Music and the University of Michigan.
He received U.S. citizenship on September 11, 2003.
His parents lived in Johannesburg and spoke the West Germanic language Afrikaans.
He played Ludwig Van Beethoven 's C Major Concerto when he debuted at the age of 12.
