Known for You Were Meant for Me, Singin' in the Rain, and All I Do Is Dream of You. He worked on The Wizard of Oz as an associate producer.

He started out as a song-plugger and pianist. He wrote and performed with the Marx Brothers in vaudeville.

He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972.

He married Renee Klein in 1923.

He helped advance the careers of many stars, including Gene Kelly , Frank Sinatra, Red Skelton, and Lena Horne.
