Influential jazz artist who composed the scores of several Portuguese films and recorded several highly acclaimed albums.
He was inspired to pursue jazz after hearing Bill Evans play.
His 2006 album Unreal: Sidewalk Cartoon was given a four stars out of four rating in the ninth edition of The Penguin Guide to Jazz and was listed in The Penguin Jazz Guide: The History of the Music in the 1000 Best Albums from 2010.
His great-grandfather was Sidónio Pais, president of the First Republic. He was married to the award-winning actress Beatriz Batarda . They parented two daughters together.
He appeared with the Napoli Jazz Sextet in The Talented Mr. Ripley from 1999, which was directed by Anthony Minghella .
