First known as the lead vocalist of a French rock band called Noir Desir, this musician rose to infamy after being convicted of the murder of his girlfriend, actress Marie Trintignant .
In the 1990s, he had a highly successful career as a rock musician and also became known for his far left political views and activism.
At the end of an eight-year prison sentence, he returned to the music scene, participating in a musical collaboration titled Choeurs and forming a music duo called Detroit.
His brief marriage to Krisztina Rady resulted in two children: Milo and Alice. Several years after her divorce from Cantat, Rady ended her own life.
He allegedly assaulted Marie Trintignant after she received a text message from her ex-husband. She suffered severe head injuries and died in the hospital several days after falling into a coma.
