He studied theater at the University of Akron. He later worked as a professional actor and director in New York and Los Angeles.
He was diagnosed with schizophrenia of the late-onset variety when he was in his forties.
His family lived in Rockford, Illinois at the time of his birth and later sent him to boarding school in West Virginia.
Psychology columnist Darcy Sterling was also involved in the mental health field.
