ABOUT BILL FRANCE SR.

Late race car driver most famous for being one of the founders of NASCAR. He is a member of numerous Halls of Fame, including the NASCAR and International Motorsports Hall of Fame.

He participated in the first-ever stock car race at the Daytona Beach Road Course on March 8, 1936, finishing in fifth place.

He was a race car driver in his own right prior to the formation of NASCAR, becoming the National Stock Car Champion in 1940.

His son, Bill France, Jr. served as the head of NASCAR from 1972 to 2000.

He and Richard Petty are both members of the NASCAR Hall of Fame Class of 2010.
