Jazz arranger and pianist who worked with some of the biggest names of his time, including Buddy Rich , Count Basie , and Doc Severinsen .
His original ambition was to be a concert pianist. This changed when he heard jazz for the first time at Los Angeles City College.
He won a Grammy in 2000 for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance.
His family was supportive of his musical ambitions, and he started studying piano at the age of five.
He was an arranger for many artists during his career, including Harry James .
