Nicknamed 'The Gunner;' served as the sportcaster for the Pittsburgh Pirates for twenty-eight years.

He was a collegiate swimmer for the University of Pittsburgh.

He was awarded the Ford C. Frick Award by the Baseball Hall of Fame after his death.

He was born in Los Angeles, California.

He provided commentary for Phil Garner and the World Series-winning 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates.
