ABOUT BOBBY MITCHELL

Running back and wide receiver who played for the Cleveland Browns and the Washington Redskins during a career that spanned from 1958 to 1968. He was a three-time First-team All-Pro selection.

In high school, he was offered a contract with the St. Louis Cardinals . Instead of playing professional baseball, he chose to attend the University of Illinois .

In 1962, he became Washington's first African-American player.

He and his wife, Gwen, had two children named Robert Jr. and Terri.

After retiring from football in 1968, he remained with Washington as a pro-scout, at the request of then-head coach Vince Lombardi .
