Director of popular family films Casper and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.

He studied film directing at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television and worked as a production assistant for a children's TV show.

He directed episodes of NYPD Blue and Doogie Howser, M.D.

He married the actress Amy Brenneman . His 2002 film Moonlight Mile was loosely inspired by his relationship with actress Rebecca Schaeffer who was murdered in 1989.

He directed Jim Carrey in Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.
