Drew his inspiration from esteemed jazz theorist George Russell . His style was described as defined and alluring.
He played jazz in Adelaide, South Australia's capital city, before moving to Canada in 1953.
He founded the Australian Jazz Quartet/Quintet with two other Australians and one American after he moved to Canada.
He was raised in Hobart, Tasmania, and never lost his allegiance to his native land, even after moving halfway around the world.
He performed with many jazz legends, including John Coltrane, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, and Count Basie .
