He attended the University of Southern California.
He founded Capitol Records with Mercer and Glenn Wallichs. He was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
His father was Aloysius J. DeSylva, who was popular in America as actor Hal De Forrest.
He frequently worked with George Gershwin during the early 1920s.
