He grew up listening to Louis Jordan , wanting to learn saxophone, but all his grandfather could afford to give him was a harmonica.
He started playing in Chicago; however, he had to play bass first because harmonica was not high in demand.
He grew up Macon, Mississippi.
He played with Muddy Waters in the early 1970s, including on his well-known track, "My Love Strikes Like Lightning."
