ABOUT CARL LACHMUND
Influential classical pianist, teacher, conductor, composer, and diarist who formed Clinton, Iowa's German Conservatory of Music in 1877.
He was graduated from the Cologne Conservatory in 1875 and spent a total of six years studying in Europe.
He founded and oversaw New York's Lachmund Conservatory and also established and conducted for a time the Women's String Orchestra.
His parents Gustav Otto and Sophia Schmidt were German immigrants.
He studied with Franz Liszt for three years, keeping a diary that gave historians ample information about the iconic composer.
