ABOUT CHARLES HALLECK

Republican politician who became a Member of the US House Representative from Indiana from 1935 to 1969. He became nearly a household name in the 60s for his regular spirited televised debates with Democratic Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen.

After serving in WW I, he was the prosecuting attorney in Rensselaer, Indiana, later gaining a vacated House seat.

Despite his frequently vocal support of Republican policies, he notably broke with his party to support a Democratically-supported civil rights bill in 1963.

He was born near DeMotte, Indiana, the son of Abraham and Lura Halleck.

He was considered as a potential vice presidential pick by several candidates, including Dwight Eisenhower .
