Lyricist known for Merrily We Roll Along and Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree (With Anyone Else but Me).
He began his music career in vaudeville. He founded a music publishing firm on Tin Pan Alley in 1923.
He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
He had two brothers, Harry and Henry, both of whom were also songwriters.
He, Eddie Cantor , and Murray Mencher wrote Merrily We Roll Along, the Merrie Melodies theme song from 1936 until 1964.
