He waas best known for setting a nearly unbeatable record in 1971 for fastest pace at Bristol Motor Speedway in a NASCAR race.
He made his NASCAR debut during the 1960 season.
He also raced in ARCA, where he was the 1964 Rookie of the Year.
He was born in Edwardsville, Indiana.
He nearly won the 1969 Daytona 500, but LeeRoy Yarbrough passed him on the final lap.
