Broadcast journalist, Democratic political commentator, and host of MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews. He also presented an NBC program called The Chris Matthews Show.

As a young man, he joined the United States Peace Corps and served for two years in Swaziland.

He was criticized for his news reporting inaccuracies and received a "Misinformed of the Year" award in 2005.

He married fellow news anchor Kathleen Matthews on June 21, 1980; the marriage produced three children.

His news programs frequently discussed the policy decisions of United States President Barack Obama .
