ABOUT CONNIE STOKES

Prior to taking office in 2004 as DeKalb County Commissioner, this Democratic Party politician represented Georgia's forty-third district in the State Senate.

After earning a bachelor's degree in business from Georgia State University, she earned her Master of Public Administration from California State University, Dominguez Hills.

In 2014, she ran for Lieutenant Governor of Georgia but was defeated by Casey Cagle.

She grew up in poverty as the child of an alcoholic mother and was raised in Atlanta, primarily by her great-grandmother. She and her husband later settled in Lithonia, Georgia, and became parents to three boys.

She and Republican Party politician Sonny Perdue both served in the Georgia State Senate.
