ABOUT DANIEL SUTHERLAND

Remembered as a 1920s delegate to the United States House of Representatives from the Alaska Territory, this Canadian-born Republican politician also had a business career in the mining and fishing industries.

In 1915, he served as president of the Alaska Territorial Senate. Before being elected five times to the U.S. Congress, he served during World War I in the United States Naval Reserve.

While in the United States House of Representatives, he proposed that the U.S. Postal Service should begin air delivering mail to Alaska.

At the age of seven, he moved from his native Nova Scotia, Canada, to Essex, Massachusetts, U.S.A. He later lived in Circle City, Nome, and Juneau, Alaska.

He and his contemporary, Ernest Gruening , were both early Alaska politicians.
