ABOUT DAVID HAZELTINE
Jazz artist and staunch defender of traditional jazz who was also innovative in his arranging and composing.
He loved music as a teenager, even playing gigs when he was 13, but he never envisioned it as a career until he was about to go to college.
He guided the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music in the revamping of its jazz program.
He credited his mother with sparking his love of jazz when she bought him a copy of Jimmy Smith Plays the Standards from 1967.
He was mentored by Chet Baker early in his career.
