David Sweat

ABOUT DAVID SWEAT

Convicted murderer who led police and three-week manhunt after literally sawing his way out of Clinton Correctional Facility in 2015. He was eventually apprehended near the Canadian border.

He was serving a life-sentence for killing a sheriff's deputy when he decided to escape. Several years were added to his sentence upon recapture.

Prison employees Joyce Mitchell and Gene Palmer were also sentenced after Sweat was captured, and a total of 20 employees were found to have been somehow at fault.

He grew up in New York state, where he was ultimately jailed for the rest of his life.

Convicted murderer Richard Matt also escaped with Sweat, but the two eventually split up and Matt was shot dead by police two days before they found Sweat.
