Specialized in bebop and Boston. His premature death at 24 was an early example of the destructive power of drugs on even the most gifted.

He played in nightclubs around Boston beginning at age 14.

He worked with Serge Chaloff, son of his piano teacher Charlie Mariano, and Charlie Parker .

His family recognized his talents and entered him into the classical training of Margaret Chaloff.

He was touring with Chet Baker in Europe when he died of a heroin overdose.
