She was a stenographer after completing college. Her breakthrough was when she replaced Ruth Etting in Follow the Leader in 1930.
She sang popular standards for songs like "I Get a Kick Out of You" and "It's De-Lovely."
She married William Smith on November 15, 1940, Robert Levitt on December 18, 1941, on March 9, 1953, and finally actor Ernest Borgnine on June 26, 1964.
She was greatly inspired by performers such as Fanny Brice who she saw in the Vaudeville show at the Palace Theatre on Friday nights with her family.
