ABOUT FRANCIS HUGHES

Irish criminal and former IRA member who was arrested after a shootout with the Special Air Service in which a soldier was killed.

He dropped out of school at sixteen and worked as an apprentice painter.

He died Irish hunger strike of 1981.

He was the youngest boy in a family of ten siblings.

He participated in the 1981 hunger strike at HM Prison Maze, an event dramatized by the 2008 film Hunger, directed by Steve R. McQueen .
