From 1997 until 2010, this British Labour Party politician represented the Houghton and Washington East constituency as a Member of Parliament.
When he was just seventeen years old, he began working for the English civil service. In the early 1980s, he became a full-time Labour Party organizer.
He was a longtime political rival of Liberal Democratic Party politician and House of Lords member Chris Rennard.
He was born and raised in Washington, County Durham, England. His marriage to Patricia Mary Byrne began in 1989 and produced three children.
He is a contemporary of fellow Labour Party MP Ian Austin .
