Forward who starred on Botafogo from 1953 to 1965, scoring 232 goals in 581 matches. He was a member of the Brazilian national team from 1955 to 1966. He played on 6 different teams throughout his professional career.

He had to overcome several deformities at birth, including a curved spine and a bent leg.

His name was placed on the home-team locker room in Rio de Janeiro's Estadio do Maracana soccer stadium. He was involved in multiple serious car accidents throughout his life.

His father was an alcoholic, a problem with which he also struggled.

When he and Pele were both in the lineup, the Brazilian national team never lost a game in international play.
