He was the winner of 1963's ABC Concerto and Vocal Competition, later known as the ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Awards.
He was the first pianist to give a complete performance of 32 Piano Pieces by Nikos Skalkottas.
His family recognized his talents early on, and he started taking piano lessons when he was eight.
He was greatly influenced by the work and playing style of Ferruccio Busoni .
