ABOUT GEORGE PAPASHVILY

Georgian-American writer and self-taught carver known for his bestselling memoir "Anything Can Happen" from 1945. He was known for combining the naive and the modern styles.

He apprenticed as a swordmaker and ornamental leatherworker in his youth. He was a sniper in the Russian army during World War I.

His book "Anything Can Happen" sold more than 600,000 copies in the U.S. and 1.5 million worldwide and was first serialized in Common Ground and Direction magazines.

He immigrated to the United States during the 1920s. He married Helen Waite, with whom he co-wrote his autobiography.

His book "Anything Can Happen" was made into a movie starring Kim Hunter and Jose Ferrer.
