Salvadoran social democratic politician who was a member of the Junta government from 1979 to 1980.

He ran as vice president in the Salvadoran presidential election of 1972 with running mate, Jose Napoleon Duarte .

He returned to El Salvador after a long exile in November 1987.

His father was a socialist who got his son interested in politics at a young age.

His government was in rule in El Salvador while Jimmy Carter was president of the United States.
