Pioneered the study and research of Beethoven, writing a thematic catalog of the composer's works and seeking out relics of his life.

He was a student in Leipzig. He became acquainted with Schumann and Mendelssohn while there.

He collected vocal and instrumental Baroque and pre-Baroque music.

He was born in Westphalia, which was located between the Rhine and Weser rivers, but he settled in Vienna.

He and Johannes Brahms were lifelong friends with Brahms caring for him on his deathbed.
