Composer known for songs such as Alice Blue Gown and Castle of Dreams. His Irene was Broadway's longest-running show at the time.

He worked for a music publisher. His 1927 musical Rio Rita was one of the first musicals to be transferred to talking pictures.

He was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.

His mother was a pianist and his father was a trumpeter.

His songs were performed by Eddie Cantor , Anna Held, and Edith Day.
