He studied classical violin and composition as a young boy.
He composed the official theme music for the 1972 Summer Olympics. He was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1993.
He married Ruth Wellstein in 1955.
He collaborated with Bert Kaempfert .
