Director of 42 films spanning four decades. He was known especially for socially conscious films like Anari, Anand, and Anokhi Raat.
He was previously a math and science teacher before becoming involved with the entertainment biz.
He received the Saheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan by the Indian government because of his contributions to the arts and Indian society.
His son died tragically in 2001 after suffering a brutal asthma attack.
He worked several times with actor Utpal Dutt on films such as 1981's Naram Garam.
