He was a pallbearer at composer Charles-Valentin Alkan 's 1888 funeral and edited the composer's works for a posthumous republication.
His first marriage ended quickly in divorce.
He and Claude Debussy were lifelong friends, meeting at the Conservatoire de Paris. He was an advocate and performer of the composer's works.
