ABOUT JACK SEGAL

Remembered for writing such popular mid-twentieth-century songs as "When Sunny Gets Blue," "Scarlet Ribbons (For Her Hair)," and "When Joanna Loved Me," this pianist, lyricist, and composer also wrote background music for such television series as Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

After earning degrees from both the University of Wisconsin and the New School for Social Research, he began working for the music division of Paramount Pictures.

He wrote jazz musician Blossom Dearie 's popular song "May I Come In?"

A native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, he later settled in Los Angeles, California. He was survived by his daughter, Jody, his sons Mark, Jason, and David, and his wife, Helen.

Singer Harry Belafonte 's 1954 recording of "Scarlet Ribbons" (with music by Evelyn Danzig Levine and lyrics by Segal) made the song an instant hit.
