ABOUT JACKIE FORSTER

Famous as a pioneering activist for lesbian rights in England, for which she earned a platform through her journalism work. She took part in the UK's first ever gay pride parade as an out lesbian in 1971, and helped to found the impactful Sappho Magazine in 1972.

She moved to Edinburgh, Scotland following World War II to begin an acting career. She would subsequently appear on London's West End before turning to journalism and activism.

She was celebrated with a Google Doodle in November 2017 for her pioneering work as a gay rights activist. She served as an active member of the Lesbian Archive and Information Centre in Glasgow, Scotland, for which her work was featured in the BBC documentary The Day That Changed My Life in 1997.

She was married to Peter Forster between 1958-1962 before moving in with her girlfriend. She raised her children with her long-time romantic partner.

She won a Prix D'Italia for her work as a correspondent covering Grace Kelly 's marriage to Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956.
