One of the most influential directors in Puerto Rican history. He was known for award-winning films like Nicolás y los Demás and Lo que le Pasó a Santiago.
He worked with the political satire and comedy group Los Rayos Gamma, starring in and directing various productions.
His 1980 film Dios los Cría was selected as one of the 25 most significant films of Latin America.
He married producer Blanca Silvia Eró.
He was given his big Hollywood break in 1971 when he acted in the Woody Allen -directed film Bananas.
