Lyricist known for I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles and Down Among The Sheltering Palms, which was a hit by the Boswell Sisters.
He started out as a comedian in vaudeville.
He was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
He immigrated to New York by himself when he was nine or 10.
His song Down Among The Sheltering Palms was featured in the soundtrack for the 1959 movie Some Like It Hot, which starred Marilyn Monroe .
