American pharmacist most famous for inventing Vernor's ginger ale in 1866.
He served in the 4th Michigan Cavalry during the American Civil War.
He was an original member of the Michigan Board of Pharmacy.
He and his son, James Vernor II, opened a soda fountain on Woodward Ave. in 1896.
