He started out as a local film critic for New York's Channel 11, WPIX.

He published several popular books, not only on movies but on baseball trivia and his father's broadway journalism.

His son Ben Lyons hosted shows for MTV and Walt Disney .

Ernest Hemingway was a friend of his and arranged for him to spend a summer learning bullfighting in Spain.
