She was selected as Minnesota's Ms. Basketball her senior year at Kennedy High School.

As a junior at Illinois, she averaged 38.7 minutes, out of a possible 40, per game. She was a 2010 WNBA Draft pick of the Washington Mystics.

She was born to Frank Smith and Gigi Gilbert and has a brother named Frankie.

She was born in the same city as Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson .
